Product Review: Musselman’s Key Lime Pie Filling

While scouring the aisles at our local Fareway grocery store for a quick summer treat, I stumbled upon the baking aisle. Since I usually don’t have time to bake from scratch, I love finding a quick and easy mix and bake type treat. Brownie mixes, pre-packaged frosting and quick to assemble desserts are favored with my time schedule.

When I ran across the pie fillings, I was surprised to find a pre-packaged Key Lime Pie Filling by Musselman’s. I wondered of it would be any good, since key lime pie is simply amazing when made from scratch.

I baked a pre-made pie shell, and allowed a package of Cool Whip to thaw as I opened the can of Musselman’s Key Lime Pie Filling.

When I opened the 21oz. can of Musselman’s Key Lime Pie Filling, there was a very mild lime scent. I couldn’t help but take a quick sample of the creamy filling before I got started, just to make sure I wasn’t wasting a good pie shell.

The pale green pie filling was sweet, with a tangy lime twist. At first I didn’t think it was flavorful enough, but I was proven wrong later.

After the pie shell cooled, I used a spatula to evenly spread the Musselman’s Key Lime Pie Filling. The 21oz. can was just enough to fill 3/4 of an extra deep sized pie shell. I topped the filling with half a container of Cool Whip, and placed it in the refrigerator for 3 hours.

When I cut into the pie, I was glad to see a firm filling. The Key Lime Pie recipe on the back of the can recommended to chill the pie for 4 hours, but after 3 hours the filling was set and firm.

The slice of pie kept it shape when served, and the pale green filling was a nice contrast to the white whip cream.

After the pie had time to chill, the filling seemed to taste more flavorful. It was smooth, and creamy with a lime flavor that wasn’t too tart.

The preparation took about 20 minutes; including the 10 minutes to bake the pie shell, 7-8 minutes to cool the pie shell, open the can of filling, open the container of Cool Whip and assemble the pie. Since I prepared the pie in the early afternoon, it was chilled and ready for dinner.

According to the Nutrition Facts on the back of the Musselman’s Key Lime Pie Filling can, 1/3 cup of the filling has 0 grams of fat, 210mg of sodium and 31 grams of sugar.

I definitely recommend Musselman’s Key Lime Pie Filling. In 20 minutes I had assembled (I really can’t say baked!) a delicious summer treat that was flavorful, creamy and tasted homemade.
