How to Relieve Itchy Skin when Pregnant

Are you expecting? Has your skin started to dry out or become very itchy? Here are some tips to help alleviate the problem for you. If your skin becomes very itchy, you can use Calamine lotion, take Oatmeal baths. Benadryl helps some with the itching, but make sure you ask you doctor if it is ok for you to take. If the itching becomes uncontrollable it is important to contact your Doctor for an appointment, as this also can be the sign of something more serious such as a liver condition, it also can be a sign of a possibly having your baby early.

This itching can be a sign of a condition call PUPPS, which occurs during pregnancy. During pregnancy many conditions you might have had before may resurface such as eczema, psoriasis, food allergies, and other skin conditions. It is important to see your Doctor to make sure that any of your symptoms are not serious. They say No Question is a stupid question. But that a question not asked is stupid. Your Doctor can prescribe an cream to put on your skin, and if that does not work you might be given a prescription to take orally.

It is important not to take hot showers or baths, let your water cool to just warm. This will help to prevent your skin from drying out. Use a good body lotion and put it on right after you get out of the shower or bath.

If you find that the Calamine lotion, oatmeal baths, benadryl are not helping, try using cold compresses laid on the itchy area, it immediately relieves the itching. Also putting your feet in a tub of cold water helps. Being in and air condition room in the summer will help keep you cool, and help when you are putting the cold compresses on you skin to keep them cool longer.

Other ways to keep comfortable is to wear loose fitting clothing to prevent rubbing on your skin which can trigger the itching all over again. I found that just sitting around the house in the summer in my bra and underwear was the best. I could lay cold clothes on my stomach which would relieve the itching as long as I kept the clothes cold. The rubbing on Calamine lotion, and putting it on fairly thick so that it sealed and prevented air from reaching my skin. When I would start to itch I would put another layer on. Now you want to use the old fashion Calamine lotion (it is pink) And it has to say Calamine lotion, as it works the best, the other ones that are pink are more watered down and do not work as good. Calamine goes on thicker and dries and lasts for awhile.

Keeping out of the sun in the summer will also help to prevent your skin from drying out. I liked to use a body lotion with Aloe vera in it, it was very soothing. For some the itching may start at a couple months of pregnancy, and for others it starts later in their pregnancy when you are already getting uncomfortable. The itching sometimes will stop right after you have your baby, and for some it will continue or even start after you have the baby and last a few months. With mother nature one never knows.
