Strip any pre-existing finishes with a paint stripper. Wear gloves and a face mask while you apply the varnish. Clean the wood to be treated with a steel wood pad dipped in about 1 c. mineral spirit, mixed with 2 tsp. of linseed oil. Sand the top surface to apply the varnish to a smooth coating. You may want to use a sanding sealer first, before appling two coats of the finish product. Apply two coats, letting the first coat dry, approximately 20 minutes, depending on the weather. Dip the paint brush into the varnish poured into the container, and apply it to the surface in one direction. Apply a light coat, with the first coat. Do not try to fix it if you see where you have missed a few spots. You can fix it on the next stroke. Do not criss-cross with the brush, or go back, and fourth. When varnishing floors, do 3 lengths of the floor boards at a time, from one end to the other. Do this until you have completely coated the entire floor. Then sand the floor, repeating this step process over again.
