Top 5 Worst Godzilla Moments

It can sometimes be difficult to pin down the worst moments in a series of movies such as the Godzilla franchise, but there are definitely some moments where the world’s most famous monster looked pretty silly. Godzilla fans have always debated the best moments in the Godzilla movies over the years, but here are the top five worst moments ever seen in a Godzilla movie.

5) Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) – Bare-chested robot scene

Toho Pictures can sometimes have a unique way of trying to put some sexy into a Godzilla movie. Sometimes it works, as it did in the first Godzilla Versus Mechagodzilla (1974) where the notion of protecting the two attractive ladies in the movie became paramount to the plot. But in the 1975 follow up titled Terror of Mechagodzilla, it is difficult to tell what Toho was trying to accomplish. Halfway through the movie we are let in on the secret that the main female character is actually a robot. After a few missteps here and there by the male heroes, the female robot winds up on an operating table with her bare breasts exposed. This scene stands out because Toho, and Japanese science fiction movies in general, are not as good at objectifying the female form as American movie makers are. That is probably a good thing, because it allows the movie to stick to the plot and not get sidetracked by fluff scenes.

4) Godzilla Versus Gigan (1972) – Godzilla Speaks!

This movie makes another appearance later in the list, but this scene was just too good to pass up. When Godzilla and Angilus are discussing the problems going on back on the Japanese mainland in perfect English, it becomes a laughable scene. To augment the conversation, the sound of a record being run backwards accompanies each monster’s line. This was the first, and last, time that Toho let any of the monsters speak.

3) Ebrirah, Horror of the Deep (1966) – Giant Condor

In Ebirarh, Horror of the Deep we are stuck with Godzilla, a giant shrimp and a raggedy bird on an island in the middle of nowhere. If this list were longer then every movie that does not involve a major city would be on it, and this movie would be at the head of that list. The scene in question here is when Godzilla falls asleep on the unnamed island in the movie, only to be awakened by Gai the giant condor. The battle lasts only a couple of minutes, and it could be one of the most useless scenes in any Godzilla movie.

2) Godzilla Versus King Kong (1962) – Puppet Battle

Godzilla versus King Kong gets a lot of credit for pushing Godzilla to new heights with American movie audiences, but that does not mean it is a good movie. There are several scenes from this film that could have been included on this list including the painted Japanese natives, the terrible octopus battle or the lack of effort put into the picture of the satellite that was being used by the United Nations to beam reports back and forth all over the world. The scene that did make this list lasts only a second or two, and it is a landscape scene where we see Godzilla and King Kong fighting off in the distance beyond the hills. If you look closely, you can see the sticks that the picture puppets are mounted on as the two figures bounce around in battle.

1) Godzilla Versus Gigan (1972) – Godzilla Flies!

Angilus lines up Gigan, and Godzilla uses his laser breath to fly on his tail and kick Gigan in the chest multiple times. It is easy to see why this movie was considered to be the beginning of the end for the Showa series of Godzilla movies.
