As in the words of the California state motto….Eureka! Yes, that is Greek for “I Found it!” According to www.netstate.com, it was originated by Major Robert Selden Garnett, who had included that word on his design of The Great Seal of California. It is the only state motto from the Greek language, and was not officially accepted until 1963.
Before you say, “It’s all Greek to me,” most people have related the word “Eureka” to the discovery of gold in California in 1849. So, just what did I find? For all intents and purposes, the very best online karaoke site. What is it, you ask? Well, just go to www.blogcatalog.com.
Once there, hit the “Search” tab at the top of the page. That will take you to another page. Type ‘karaoke’ into that space, then hit search. You will be given three karaoke sites. Hit the middle one, “Free Online Karaoke and Random Videos,” and voila! You have a vast array of free karaoke at your fingertips!
In the middle of that page is the word ‘Categories’ with one song from the 1930’s….actually Judy Garland singing “Over the Rainbow” from her black-and-white TV show from 1963 or 1964…after her voice had already gone downhill drastically. Next are songs listed by the decade of the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, followed by an alphabetical list of all the artists represented so far on that site. The list runs down all the way to the bottom of the page.
I like the idea that there are some 125 artists represented on the site, plus separate categories like Duet, Funny Video of the Week and Great Collaborations. Also, if you would like to look up a song itself, hit the ‘List of all karaoke’ tab at the very top of the page. That will display all the songs in alphabetical order on the left side of that page.
When you click on any of the songs, the site features a top video of the actual singer or group performing the song. Beneath it is a video screen that presents the words to be sung over background music in case you don’t want to hear the artist in the background. Finally, if you do want to hear the artist, too, the words of the song are printed largely beneath the instrumental video screen.
Why was I so excited to find such a wonderful online karaoke site? There are several reasons: 1) Karaoke bars are often extremely crowded. 2) Bars can be quite smoke-filled. 3) One can often wait for nearly an hour just to have the chance to sing. 4) Some people are really shy singing in front of a huge crowd of strangers. 5) You don’t have to worry about being in the bathroom when they finally call your name and song to sing. 6) You can have your own karaoke party off your own computer screen. 7) Alcohol is far cheaper buying it from the store than from bars. 8) You don’t feel guilty for not tipping your host or hostess. 9) You don’t have to worry about microphones. 10) You don’t have to worry about any strangers hitting on you in public…just your own close, drunken friends in the privacy of one’s home!
