Teaching Your Child to Count for Free

People are always looking for free ways to do things. I came up with a small solution to teaching your child the basics of mathematics for free.

Most children learn things by repetition and therefore you should always repeat yourself throughout this learning experience and remember to be patient, learning a new subject for the first time, is always a little complicated.

Singing to your child is always fun and now you can involve a little math in the equation. Songs like one little, two little, three little boys and girls, is always a great way to teach your child how to count to ten. They will love the song and because the song repeats itself, they will be able to learn the numbers quicker. You can also make up your own songs to go along with counting numbers.

Let your child pay the grocery bill. Allow your child to pay for the items that you need to purchase the next time that you go to the store. This will show them that money does not grow on trees and it will also show them a great learning skill for counting up change. I know of a few people who started to give their children allowances because they said that it teaches them about money as well as how to add up the merchandise so that they know if they have enough money to purchase the items.

Play the guessing game. I don’t know of one child that doesn’t like the guessing game and it is easy to play. Tell you child that you are thinking of a number and ask your child to find that number for you. They will be looking around for numbers within the area that you are in so that they can guess to see if they found the right one. This will help them to be able to visualize the number with the sound of it.

When pulling up in a driveway to a building or house, ask your child to read off the numbers that are on the door or garage. If they get it right praise them, if they don’t then ask them to guess again. Some children will need your help when they first start to learn numbers.

Have a number of the day. Pick a number for that day and build your day around it. Have your child to try to find that number throughout the day and keep track of how many that your child can find. This will be like a race with your child to beat the amount that they had found the previous day.

You can find a lot of different ways throughout your home to teach your child how to count. This is a great stepping stone for your child and they will be excited to tell everyone that they know how to count and you will be the one who smiles each time because you are the one who taught it too them.
