The Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland will host two daytime balloon drops (with many of the balloons filled with prizes) and celebrations for families. Music, prizes and access to the entire museum included with admission. Balloon drops will take place between 12:45pm and 3:45pm.

Phantom of the Opera Screening

What better way than to celebrate the New Year in grand style with the screening of the restored 1929 version of Phantom of the Opera, starring Lon Chaney in the title role. Famed New York organist Dorothy Papadakos will accompany the film on the cathedral’s renowned Aeolian-Skinner organ.

There will be two screenings- one at 7:00 pm, hosted by Jan Wahl, KRON-TV and KCBS-AM’s movie and entertainment critic and then the other art10:00 pm, hosted by the fabulous Donna Sachet.

The city of San Francisco hosts annually a free alcohol-free New Years Eve celebration on The Embarcadero, near Mission Street. There will be possibly be live music, radio simulcast and a spectacular midnight fireworks display on the waterfront. Restaurants nearby (like Gordon Biersch) and cruise ships (like the Hornwblower) are selling fireworks packages for people to purchase and take part in the pyro event.

My family and I are planning to be here on New Year’s Eve. We will be taking my husband’s parents, siblings and their kids to join in the fun. We have already packed our picnic blankets and will be packing up our food baskets before we leave for the event. This will surely be a memorable clan experience.

My city, South San Francisco, which is San Francisco’s next door neighbor, is celebrating its 100th year in 2008. To commence the year long festivities, it will hold a New Year’s Eve Gala. This soiree is open only to South San Francisco residents, businesses, and organizations. It will be a night of ballroom dancing with lots of food.
