Arts and Crafts Activities for the Letter D

Cut out a large letter D out of various colors of construction paper. Have each child glue their D to another piece of construction paper then use hole punchers to make dots out of the scraps. Decorate the D picture with different colors of dots.

Make simple daisy paintings with your class. Cut sponges into circle shapes and flower petal shapes. Have each child press the circle into yellow or orange paint and make a circle in the center of their paper the press the flower petal shape into another color to make the petals around the daisy.

Science Activity for the Letter D

Plant a daffodil garden in the fall that will bloom in the spring. Provide small shovels for the children to dig up a section of the garden area. Give each child a couple of bulbs to plant. Show them which direction of the bulb is the bottom. Check the gardens progress each week as spring approaches. When the daffodils begin to sprout, explain that the warm weather encourages the plants to grow.

Math Activities for the Letter D

Photocopy pictures of dimes onto grey computer paper and photocopy pictures of dollars onto green paper and cut out ten dimes and one dollar for each child.. Have each child glue one dollar onto one side of the paper and ten dimes onto the other side while explaining that ten dimes is equal to one dollar. Using a marker, draw a large equal sign between the dime and the dollars and label each side of the paper “1 dollar” or “10 dimes”.

Introduce the concept of a dozen. Explain that a dozen is equal to twelve and that many times in grocery stores items can be bought in dozens. Bring in a box with a dozen donuts, a dozen eggs, and a 12 pack of water bottles.

Snack Time

Give each child a clear plastic cup to build a Dirt Sundae. Have each child scoop in spoonfuls of vanilla flavored yogurt, graham cracker crumbs, Oreo cookie crumbs, peanuts, and raisins.

Make simple homemade donuts using refrigerated biscuit dough. Use a bottle cap to punch a hole in the middle of each biscuit. Fry each biscuit in one inch of oil until light brown (about one minute). Cool on layers of paper towels. When the donuts are cool, shake them in bags of powdered sugar, brown sugar, or a cinnamon-sugar mixture.
