Once your frame has been distressed with the bike chain, start sanding the surface of your plain Picture Frame.

Once you have the surface of the wood frame lightly sanded, you should wipe off the dust with a clean dry clothe.

Now, you are ready to put a coat of primer. We all know how important primer is.

Allow your primer to dry completely.

Tip: Use spray on paints and primer’s for a smoother look as well.

Put on a coat of your white or cream base paint. This is either a white or cream color. You could do a bone white as well. This paint should not be the actual color you want your Vintage looking Picture Frame to end up, but the color you want to show through when you finish the Vintage Yellow Shabby Chic Picture Frame.

Now you are ready to paint your surface with the real color you wish it to be. You can apply this wiht a traditional paint brush or even try rubbing the paint on with a sponge. For a dry brushed or really streaky finihs go with the sponge. Have a clean rag nearby to wipe away any messes.

Tip: Use Pale Gold #2 from Laura Ashley for the perfect Vintage Yellow Color. You can buy it by the gallon at Lowes. Yellow milk paint woudl also work.

Once your vintage yellow shabby chic Picture Frame color has dried you are ready to start roughing it up. Start by using the sand paper to rough up edges and other areas that would typically be used over time. You can also break out the nike chain again here. Other tools like a clean grill brush work well to scrape away paint too.

The grill brush will really scratch the paint surface heavily, so keep that in mind.

Once you have finished sanding the Picture Frame surface wipe the surface down with a clean dry cloth.

Tip: If your yellow turned out too bright or pastel there are some ways to make it look more vintage. I like to use a mixture of ½ wood stain and ½ glaze to darken your piece. This darkening will mimic years of dirt and the aging process. Even the worst yellow can be helped to look vintage with this step!

Start by mixing you paint and glaze in a plastic container. Use a white rag or another old t-shirt to rub the stain onto the Picture Frame.
