Go Green Craft for Kids: Go Green Goal Board

It seems that everyone is Going Green these days. Everyone wants to do their part to help stop global warming, save our natural resources, and become a more responsible member of the planet earth. Even kids want to get in on the act, so I thought I would try to come up with a few crafts that can help kids Go Green. This Go Green Craft is a bulletin board that the kids can use to post ideas on how their own family can Go Green, ways their family is already Going Green, and even way to help educate friends about Going Green.

To Make This Go Green Craft Bulletin Board Kids Will Need:

One cork Board

Recycled Card Stock

Recycled White Paper

You can use any sized corkboard as the basis for this Go Green Craft for kids. I think a board at least 3 feet wide and two feet tall would work well.

Now, have the kids make a list of ways they can go green in their own home. Try checking out website like HGTV.com, Oprah.com, and evening searching the words Go green in a search engine to come up with ideas. You will most likely come across ideas like changing light bulbs, lowering the thermostat, using your car less and even planting flowers in your yard that attract bugs. Have the kids choose 5 goals they know their family can meet and then a few more that they will really have to make some changes to do!

Now, write each one of these Go Green goals on a piece of recycled white paper cut out into a small rectangle, maybe the size of an index card.

Cut out some brightly colored recycled card stock to go behind it.

These goals should be lined up on the left side of the board running up and down.

Now, across the top you can make headers for three columns, one should be self, one should be family, and the final ones should be friends.

Now, have the kids cut out some fun Go Green inspired shaped out of more card stock. Shapes like stars, flowers, bugs, and even clouds will work. They can use pinking sheers or scissors to cut them out. These shapes should be large, about 4X6 inches.

Now, place one shape in each category. You should end up with a large grid.

Now, each week the kids can update their own progress to Go Green, their family’s progress going green, and even any friends they are trying to help Go Green.

Hang the Go Green Craft board in you child’s bedroom. Near a desk would work well. Now, time for a family meeting! Have everyone discuss his or her goals this week for going green. These would be the goals listed on the board.

Each time you meet your goal, add a gold star to the cut out next to family and under the goal you were trying to meet. Use a pen to date the star.

Try rewards like a Go Green family day reward to encourage kids to keep the thermostat set lower, to walk more, to recycle newspapers, not unnecessarily waste school supplies, and what ever steps you are taking to Go Green! You could even turn this Go Green Craft into a neighborhood event!
