22. National Goof-off Day: Everyone needs some time to be carefree. Take advantage of National Goof-off Day to let loose.
23. National Puppy Day: Going on it’s 6th year, National Puppy Day focus on encouraging people to adopt abandoned puppies. This observance is also to educate people about the cruelty of puppy mills and backyard breeding.
24. World Tuberculosis Day: On March 24, 1882, Dr. Robert Koch announced that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis. This announcement came during the time when tuberculosis was killing 1 out 7 people in Europe and the Americas. Although the risk of tuberculosis has decreased since 1882, there are still millions of deaths a year caused by this infectious disease.
25. Tolkien Reading Day: The theme for 2011’s Tolkien Reading Day is “Tolkien’s Trees”. This celebration is for readers to get together and explore some of the many aspects of J.R.R. Tolkien’s books. To take part in the “Tolkien’s Trees” theme, read about and discuss the many trees and forests in the books on March 25th.
26. Earth Hour: After starting in 2007 in Australia, more and more people have participated in Earth Hour each year. This year’s Earth Hour takes place on March 26 at 8:30pm (local time). To participate, simply turn off all lights for an hour.
27. National “Joe” Day: National “Joe” Day is simply to recognize those with the name of Joe and it’s other variations (such as Josephine, Jose, and Joseph).
28. National Black Forest Cake Day: A far as cakes go, Black Forest Cake is one of the best. This rich German cake is made of fluffy chocolate cake layers, divided by whipped cream and cherries. Authentic versions also include cherry liqueur, although United States’ version rarely include alcohol.
29. National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day: This is the day to give recognition to small business owners, particularly couples. Although these small businesses account for most United States’ businesses, they do not receive enough appreciation. Many communities offer events for small business owners to partake in.
30. National Doctors Day: There are many doctors and physicians who deserve recognition for the outstanding work and help they provide. If you want to show your appreciation, feel free to give your doctor a small gift or a card on March 30th.
31. Terri’s Day: International Day of Prayer and Remembrance for Terri Schindler Schiavo, and All of Our Vulnerable Brothers and Sisters (commonly shortened to “Terri’s Day”) commemorates the death of Terri Schindler Schiavo. In 1990, Terri Schiavo entered a vegetative state after experiencing extreme potassium deficiencies, possibly from an “iced tea diet. Over the next 15 years, the future of her life was debated between her husband and her parents. Her husband wanted to end her life, saying there was no hope for recovery, using doctors’ statements as backup. Terri’s parents, however, said there was hope, basing it off of moments that Terri seemed to display some comprehension. After a long battle, Terri’s husband won and she was taken off of her feeding tube. She died thirteen days later, on March 31, 2005, of dehydration.
