Review of Valspar Paint

A Valspar paint review is an easy review to write. We have used Valspar paint for many years and have been satisfied with the overall coverage and coloring. There are some tricks to use any paint and Valspar is no different.

Valspar carries both primer and paint. It is recommend by the company to use the same brand of primer and paint. After trying a non-Valspar primer with Valspar paint, it is also my recommendation that you use the same type primer as paint.

I have found that the Valspar primer works very well, even on dark color surfaces. It is important to put a thick covering of primer on the surface to achieve total coverage. Use a roller and do not thin out with a paintbrush. Use good lighting to make sure you have adequate coverage.

The first experience I had using Valspar paint was painting the walls in our bedroom. I was very discouraged, as the paint seemed to be thin, not covering well. The background was white so I did not imagine that I needed to use a primer. When I went to the store to complain about the paint, I was told that a primer was necessary to achieve the proper color advertised. From that point on, whenever I chose to paint with Valspar, I primed first, making sure I got a primer that was compatible with the color of paint I was using.

When using Valspar paint, make sure you have proper ventilation. The fumes are very strong and I highly recommend not painting on a day where the air is heavy. The fumes do not dissipate very quickly. Using fans to help dry the walls and having the windows open will definitely help the fumes from being as potent.

I do not recommend Valspar brand to be used on any type of furniture. The paint itself is rather on the soft side. It does not form a hard finish so it easily peels. I have once tried using it on an old wooden chair. I stripped the old paint and then sanded the wood piece before using a black Valspar paint. I left the chair to dry in the basement for over a week before I brought it upstairs to use. The first time my husband sat down on the chair, a rivet on his jeans peeled some paint off one of the back spindle rungs. I also tried using the Valspar brand on an end table that I had distressed. Again, it looked good to begin with but the paint scratched and peeled easily.

Valspar carries several lines within their paint. I have found that Valspar Signature is one of the best paints for doing deep colors. Make sure you use a tinted Valspar primer that compliments the deep color you want to achieve.

No matter what type of paint you choose to use, follow the recommended applying and clean-up procedures. To avoid messes, put down drop clothes and keep a wet rag handy to wipe up any spills on the woodwork. This Valspar paint review gives you a look at both the pros and cons of Valspar paint. Try a sample and see what you think.
