The truly nice thing about a portable washer and dryer set is, you can bring them out when you need them, and put them away when you don’t.
The use of portable washers and dryers are most convenient because you do not need a laundry area, room or closet. You do not need special hook-ups since the washer can be wheeled to the sink and hooked up to the faucet for use, and the dryer takes a regular household outlet.
General Electric
General Electric has a portable washer and dryer set called the Spacemaker. The washing machine is a 24″ portable machine with a 2.5 cubic foot capacity; and just like some of the bigger machines, it has a 1-Touch Control with 10 washing cycles. It has a 120 volt circuit requirement, and also has a loading sensor which automatically sets the water level to reduce water waste. The cost of this unit runs about $850.00.
The matching Spacemaker dryer is also a 24″ portable electric dryer with a 3.5 cubic foot capacity with 3 cycles and 3 heating selections. This dryer also has a 120 volt circuit requirement. It has a special “Quiet – By – Design” sound insulation, and can be run even into the night without any disturbances. The cost of this unit runs about $650.00.

Whirlpool
Whirlpool has three different models of portable washing machines to choose from, with a cost ranging from $450.00 to $680.00. They are a little bit more compact the General Electric models, at 22″. There size is 2.1 cubic foot capacity; which means you won’t be washing large loads, but they are still adequate enough for normal household laundry needs. They have 4 wash cycles and 3 temperature settings, with stainless steel drums. Each has a drawer that dispenses the detergent.
The Whirlpool portable dryer has a 3.4′ capacity, with an AccuDryA sensor that shuts off the dryer when the load is dry, thus preventing over-drying. It’s cost ranges from $475.00 to $550.00.
Kenmore
The Kenmore portable washing machine has a 2.1 cubic foot capacity, and comes in white. This portable works in the same way as the regular size machines, but has the wonderful convenience of being portable. It has a stainless steel wash basket with a Quiet-Pak™ Plus sound insulator. It also comes with 4 washing cycles and 3 speeds to care for a wider range of fabric types. The cost of this machine is $449.00
The dryer, also white, comes with a 3.4 cubic foot capacity, 3 drying cycles and 2 temperature settings. It has a 110 volt circuit requirement, with up to 105 minute drying time. This dryer also has a ‘dry sensor that shuts off when the load is dry.

When you use 110 volt circuits instead of 220 for your drying purposes, you will find that the clothes will not dry quite as fast. We made up for this by putting the dryer in our kids play room, on a stand that my husband built. He also got a special screen for the back, to be cleaned after each use, just like on a regular dryer. That way, the use of the dryer would also help to keep the room warm in the colder months.
