Oroweat Soft Family Whole Wheat Bread

Whole grains are an important aspect to a healthy diet, and I always buy only 100% whole wheat breads. During my last shopping trip to buy bread, I picked up a package of Oroweat Soft Family 100% Whole Wheat Bread because it was on sale, and I have always liked most 100% whole wheat breads that I have tried.

Product Description

Oroweat Soft Family 100% Whole Wheat Bread is a smaller loaf of bread, and the slices are smaller than my regular whole wheat brand of bread. They measure 4 inches square, and have what looks like wheat bran sprinkled on the tops.

The back of the bag explains what Oroweat is trying to give their customers with their Oroweat Soft Family 100% Whole Wheat Bread. It reads “Now there’s a great tasting and healthy bread for the entire family! Delicious Oroweat Soft Family breads blend nutritious whole grains into a soft and smooth kid-friendly texture. So now you can make a great tasting sandwich everyone will love!”

What I Think

Being on a diet and being a health conscious person, I loved the claims written all over this package of Oroweat Soft Family 100% Whole Wheat Bread. I took it home and made a sandwich from it for lunch that same day. That happened to be almost two weeks ago, and there is still 1/3 of a package of this bread left.

Neither my husband or I really care for the texture and taste of this Oroweat Soft Family 100% Whole Wheat Bread. It reminds me of some of the low carb breads on the market, and wasn’t at all what I expected. The only way this is palatable for me is when I toast the bread first, then add some sugarless jam to my toast. It’s not too bad prepared that way, but this bread really ruins a good sandwich for me!

I called the Oroweat company and asked what they did to this to make the texture different, but they could not tell me as it is a trade secret. I am not impressed, and won’t be purchasing any more loaves of Oroweat Soft Family 100% Whole Wheat Bread.

On the surface, this bread meets and exceeds all of my expectations, and is about the same price as other 100% whole wheat breads (and don’t be fooled by those brown colored breads with the first ingredient of “wheat flour. If it does not say “whole wheat flour”, it’s probably not whole grain).

The lower calories are great, many of the breads I regularly eat contain 100 or more calories per slice, so 130 calories per two slices in this Oroweat bread is very reasonable. Too bad the taste just doesn’t measure up for me.
