The Maryland Hunter’s Education Program, which became mandatory in 1977, is a requirement for all hunters who are buying their first Maryland hunting license. This program is in place to promote safe hunting and to reduce the number of hunting related accidents and hunting violations as well as to promote responsible hunting and to increase the knowledge of hunters in Maine. With goals such as these, this program will help increase the number of hunters who are enjoying this great sport.
Hunters who are required to attend and successfully complete a hunter’s education program in order to obtain their Maryland hunting license have the opportunity decide between taking the course the traditional classroom method or the independent study method, which ever one best suites their circumstances. The traditional classroom method is usually offered during the end of summer and the beginning of fall, right before hunting season begins. Occasionally, there are hunting education programs offered in the spring right before the beginning of Spring Turkey Season. No matter which course the hunter decides to attend, they will need to pre-register to ensure they have a spot in their chosen course. Hunting education courses are scheduled and held by instructors who are volunteers, and are often held over a weekend or several week nights during the week along with one day on a weekend. The cost of these courses is generally $6 and is to offset any expenses incurred to present the course. After completing all phases of this course and passing a final exam, the student will be issued a certificate of completion.
The Maryland Hunter’s Education Program is a hunters safety course that is 10 to 14 hours in length when offered in the traditional classroom setting and covers important hunting subjects such as safely handling firearms and ammunition, hunter responsibility, marksmanship, wildlife management, shooting fundamentals and techniques, survival and first aid and Maryland hunting laws. These courses also cover bowhunting and muzzleloading safety as well as safety on the water. Hunting students must attend all parts of these courses and must pass a final exam, and must prove to the instructor that they are responsible, and can hunt safely and ethically before being awarded a certificate of completion. These hunting courses are open to hunters of all ages, but those who are 13 or under must be accompanied by an adult who is also participating in the program. The independent study portion of this program is offered to hunters who are sixteen years old or older requires the student to complete the study guide and workbook before attending the field day portion of the hunter education program. The independent study student must bring the completed workbook and proof of age to the location of the field day for which they have registered. After being admitted to the field day course, the independent study student will be expected to participate in a lecture which covers safely handling firearms, safely firing firearms and safely hunting from a tree stand. After the student has participated in all phases required, they will take a final exam, an if they pass it, they will be issued their certificate.
