Live for Free as a House Sitter

House sitting one of the ways that starving artists keep from being homeless. It is great work if you can get it, but you should know that it is tough to come by in tourist areas. There is generally no pay, but the room is free. In expensive neighborhoods or countries, this is a huge savings. In Los Angeles, the average apartment ranges from $1100-$1500, so you can see why it would be a savings.

You may house sit locally or internationally, but either way, you have to advertise your services. The sites below are some of the better sites to find out who is looking and where.

Definition:

House sitting is the practice whereby a landlord (or “homeowner”), leaving his house for a period of time, entrusts it to one or more “house sitters”, who by a mutual agreement are entitled to live there rent-free in exchange for assuming responsibilities such as taking care of the homeowner’s pets, performing general maintenance (including pools, lawns, air-conditioning systems etc.), keeping trespassers off the property, readdressing the mail, and in general, making sure that everything runs smoothly just as if the owner was at home. Websites:

Care Takers (http://www.caretaker.org): This publication has been around since 1983. They have many leads on housing needing sitters, to pets needing a companion. Some are free room, while others offer a stipend if there is work involved.

They charge $29.99 for a year subscription. It is published bimonthly, but new listings are sent out each week.

House Carers (http://www.homecarers.com): This site allows homeowners to advertise for free. It seems to be strictly house sitting. House sitters are charged $39 for 12 months.

Mind My House (http://www.mindmyhouse.com): Membership is currently free for house sitters because the site is relatively new. It will always be free for homeowners. Setting up an account was easy, and I would say took about 10 minutes, including activation and writing your sitter advertisement.

House sitting can be fun, living on the beach or in a home that is out of your price range, but it is a responsibility as well. You are responsible for any destruction you cause in a home. That means, hold the party in a bar or someone else’s home.

House sitting also allows you the opportunity to travel. This usually requires some recommendations. Further, if you choose to house sit in France, remember you will most likely have to pay for the plane ticket.

All the sites have some kind of agreement that both parties are required to sign. This eliminates misunderstandings, and it is great for people who are afraid to speak up for themselves. No agreement, no job. Protect yourself.

Arrangements are generally for one week to a year, depending on the circumstance, so be prepared. You decide if you just want to house sit by the beach for the summer or in England for the year.

House sitting is a great way to see new communities and to make new friends.
