‘Idol’ Judges Speak: Mariah Carey Dishes on Diva Drama, Nicki Minaj Makes a Twitter Comeback
She’s back, Barbz!
It’s been a quiet month for Nicki Minaj Twitter followers. After the outspoken rapper and freshman “American Idol” judge took an extended and unannounced hiatus from her Twitter page, she got back to tweeting Team Minaj over the weekend. Meanwhile, fellow “Idol” judge Mariah Carey was chatting it up with her own Barbz– as in Barbara Walters.
Minaj’s return to Twitterverse kicked off with a bevy of smooches for her fans with this tweet: “*kisses my babies* Hi Barbz!!!!!!! muah! muah! mmmmuuuaaahhhh!!!! LOVE U!!!! What’s been going on?!?!?!!?”
Later she explained: “I didn’t leave barbz, I was still here in spirit and u guys KNOW that so stop with the dramatics!!!” and added: “I really didn’t plan on leaving barbz! =( just sorta happened…I learned a lot on my little sabbatical tho… so enlightening, so peaceful.”
Minaj’s Twitter vaca came after a series of rants against Carey and former “Idol” judge Steven Tyler, as well as a nasty tweet aimed at “The View” host Barbara Walters.
Speaking of Walters, the veteran news journalist seems to be on Team Carey– at least for now.
In an interview for “Nightline,” Carey sat down with Walters and once again addressed the diva drama that hit the “Idol” auditions last summer when Minaj allegedly threatened her.
It felt like an unsafe work environment,” Carey said. “Anytime anybody’s reeling threats at somebody, you know, it’s not appropriate. I’m a professional. I’m not used to that type of environment.” (At the time, Carey alleged that Minaj threatened to shoot her with a gun.)
The singer said she also hired more security as a precaution. “I just felt it was the appropriate thing to do,” she said. “Sitting there on the road with two babies [20 month old twins Moroccan and Monroe], I’m not going to take any chances.”
Minaj’s camp has long denied charges that Nicki threatened to shoot Carey, but now that the diva drama has quieted down, Carey told Walters that she hopes it will at least help “Idol.”
“For all the drama, I hope it helps the show,” she said. “I think it’s a classic, classy show and it didn’t need this.”
She also added that she and Minaj have patched things up and the focus is now on finding the cream of the crop among “American Idol’s” latest batch of contestants.
“For me, ultimately, this is about the kids, the contestants,” Carey said. I’ve been blessed to live my dream more than half my life, so I want help give that back to someone else.
“American Idol” Season 12 premieres on Jan. 16 at 8/7c on FOX.
