Wine tours through North Georgia are becoming more and more popular. Last year I went on one out of Athens that encompassed seven wineries in two days. A new one in the mix is the beautiful Montaluce Estate in Dahlonega.
Blessed with some of the steepest, well-drained hillsides to be found in the U.S., North Georgia’s topography, elevation, and long growing season creates an extraordinarily climate well-suited for premium wine grape cultivation. This climate, coupled with the classic “Terra Rosa” winegrowing soils of the region, serves as the foundation for the new wave of Georgia vintners producing wines of truly exceptional quality. Georgia’s long history of premium wine growing tradition shows that as early as the 1800’s, many vineyards and wineries were thriving. In Fact, Georgia ranked sixth among grape growing states in 1900.
At the heart of the Montaluce Estate and at its highest point, the property boasts a modern 25,000-square foot winery building. Reminiscent of a grand Tuscan villa, with sweeping views of the vineyards and mountains beyond, guests will discover here the Italian ideal of “La Vita Bella”, or the beautiful life-centered around food, wine and sharing.
On the winery’s main floor, the handsome Tasting Room and beautiful restaurant Le Vigne offer a place to unwind and enjoy New- and Old-World Italian dishes alongside a thoughtful wine list that includes selections from the United States as well as Italy. On the lower levels, guests may observe the fine art of winemaking in our production facility that comprises more than 9500-square feet.
