Free Internet Radio Stations

SomaFM is a commercial free Internet radio station supported completely by listeners. They are based in San Francisco, California and broadcast a wide variety of music from underground jazz to atmospheric ambient music. There is a selection of about eighteen different station to choose from, each with a different genre of music.

What I love about this site is the diverse selection of music. I put on the ‘groove salad’ station when going to sleep and listen to ‘digitalis’ when I’m working. There really is a station for any mood you’re in, and SomaFM also broadcasts special holiday stations. They had a special spooky doom music station during Halloween, and for Christmas they have a ‘Christmas Lounge’ station which delivers some chilled Christmas and winter songs.

This is a website worth checking out if you like to discover new artists and have an open mind and genuine appreciation for music. As a bonus, SomaFM offers some goodies if you choose to support them by donating a few dollars. Let’s make sure to keep the commercial free radio coming by donating!

The next Internet radio station on my list is Digitally Imported (or DI.fm). This station is known for its huge selection of electronic music such as trance, house, vocal trance, drum and bass, eurodance, and progressive techno among many others. DI has more than 30 stations to choose from, so if you’re into electronic music I’m sure you’ll find something appealing.

Digitally Imported has been around for quite some time, ranking as one of the older Internet radio stations around. They have a huge selection of European electronic music which you can get the most out of by subscribing to a premium count. This will allow you to listen to all radio stations in the highest bit rate available. Be sure to check out their DJ nights and live sets.

Pandora Radio is another great radio station that deserves a little bit more recognition. There are no limitations here, and it is the ultimate service for those listeners who have a diverse taste in music.

At Pandora Radio you can type in any artist you want, and it will automate a station for you based on that artist’s music qualities. This can make for some interesting listening because as the artists change so does the direction of your station. You can start with some hip-hop that has all electronic based beats, and end up listening to techno ten songs later, and this is not a bad thing for me. I have discovered about fifty new bands in one month thanks to this service

Please note that all of these services are completely free. Pandora Radio has a forty hour limit and to continue listening after you’ve reached the limit, you must pay a measly 99 cents per month to continue. This is a great value however, because you can have up to one hundred stations customized to your liking.
