Five Ways to Dress Skinny Legs

It seems that no matter what body type a woman has, she’ll always have at least one thing to complain about. Plenty of women fret because they wish they had a little less flesh to contend with, particularly in the hips and thighs. But on the other end of the spectrum, extremely thin women are sometimes self-conscious about not having enough curves to fill out sexy outfits (oh, the horror…) As such, these ladies find that no matter how much exercise they do to acquire muscle mass, their legs still remain on the thin side. So what is a lady to do if her gams aren’t as curvy as she’d like them to be? You may not be able to miraculously add girth to this area. But the clothes you wear can certain make thinner legs look more flattering.

Leg Warmers

Fortunately, the 80’s are still going strong in the fashion world. And while everyone can’t get away with wearing this trend, they happen to look fabulous on women whose calves need a little “assistance.” During fall and winter, sliding a pair of these on top of leggings and a pair of high-heeled booties is ultra chic. Bunch the leg warmers slightly (not too much), and pull the bottoms down over the heel just a tad.

The problem that most people have with these incredibly fashionable items is looking outdated. But the way that you wear them will make all the difference. Put all notions of ballet out of your mind, and pay close attention to the texture and color of the leg warmers. If you use them as part of a gentle, layered look in monochromatic (or neutral) hues, not only will you disguise calves that aren’t so shapely, you’ll look amazingly hip.

Over-the-knee Boots

Another fashion accessory that is huge this year are over-the-knee boots. These shoes are fabulous for women who are trying to play up their assets while downplaying legs that don’t have all the curves. For instance, if you are fairly tall, and still have an hourglass shape, a pair of these boots can make you look like a vixen. The trick in wearing over-the-knee boots is to choose a pair that isn’t too slouchy. Select boots that have plenty of structure; when you walk, you won’t feel them sliding down your slender legs.

Shoes with Ankle Straps

Most fashionistas will tell you that if you have skinny legs, you’ll want to stay away from pumps with clunky heels. Instead, choose thin-heeled pumps (though some stilettos may make legs look spindly) that have detailing across the foot and the ankle. Detailing like thick ankle straps appears to take emphasis off of the calf area, and breaks up the “monotony” of a long, shapeless leg. In fact, these types of shoes are made for women who have long, lean legs. Another shoe that thin-legged women look great is the gladiator sandal. These strappy shoes are fabulous with mini skirts because they create the illusion of width on the leg area.

Skirts: The Long and Short of It

Some women shy away from skirts because they don’t want to reveal their skinny legs. But you can still look as sexy as your well-rounded cousins. You’ll just need to understand which skirt lengths best adorn your frame. Try donning a pencil skirt that grazes the thickest part of your leg-typically mid-calf. The skirt should skim the hips, creating a long line that enhances your natural curves. Long skirts on tall, slender women also look particularly attractive. But if you’re brave enough to wear a mini, make sure that it is cut close to the frame, as wider skirts will only accentuate exceptionally thin legs.

Light Colors

There is some truth to the age-old adage that black slims, while white adds “bulk.” Truly, the best way to accentuate the positive is to showcase it in a different light. As such, if you happen to be slimmer on bottom than you’d like, you’re actually one of the lucky people in the world who looks quite fetching in white pants. White skinny jeans in particular will provide the illusion of shape, especially when paired with the right blouses and accessories. Wear a funky gold gladiator sandal and white tank to create a fresh monochromatic look for summer or spring.
