Decorating wine glasses with wine motifs is an affordable way to add the beauty of hand painted wine glasses to your table. You can use stencils that will help you craft the patterns of grapes or vine leaves, or you can paint them yourself following the instructions in this article. You’ll find all the materials you need in your local craft store. So let’s get started creating hand painted wine glasses
Step #1. What You’ll Need to Decorate Your Wine Glasses
* Nitrile exam gloves (optional)
* Enamel surface conditioner
* Acrylic enamel paint in purple, green and gold
* Pattern stencil (optional)
* 1 inch sponge brush
* 1 thin paint brush
Step #2. Which Wine Glasses Should You Paint
Hand painted wine glasses are typically large. This will give you plenty of room to fit your designs on the glass without coating it too thickly. I recommend creating at least a pair of hand painted glasses, to display and serve together. You can also paint a glass decanter to match your painted wine glasses.
Step #3. Prepare the Wine Glasses for Painting
Wash your wine glasses with warm water and dish soap to remove any dust or oil from your hands. Wash your hands well too or wear nitrile exam gloves during the making of your hand painted wine glasses.
Step #4. Condition the Wine Glasses for Painting
Using the 1 inch sponge brush, spread enamel surface conditioner over the wine glass, going in even strokes from top to bottom. Though a cloudy at this point, the enamel surface conditioner will become clear once it dries.
Step #5. Paint Your Wine Glass with a Stencil
If you’re using a stencil, tape it to the top of the glass with masking tape, but do not use stencil glue. Dip your thin paint brush in the acrylic enamel paint color of your choice and fill in the pattern.
You’ll have to wait for the image to dry before you can move the stencil along and paint the wine glass further. For this reason, I prefer to paint my wine glasses without a stencil.
Step #6. Paint Your Wine Glass without a Stencil
Grapes and vines are easy to paint. To create the image of hand painted grapes create a cluster of purple circles that form an upside down pyramid. Above the purple grapes paint a horizontal gold twig and spiraling green vine shoots.
To hand paint your wine glass with grape leaves, paint a set of leaves clustered together in the shape of a star. I prefer not to paint the outline of the leaf at all but, if it helps, go ahead and do so. Next paint a line down the length of the leaf. Finally, paint a column of curving lines on either side of the middle divider until these lines fill in the leaf completely (see picture).
To further decorate your hand painted wine glasses add gold curlicues between the leaves and grapes.
Step #7. Bake Your Hand Painted Wine Glasses
Allow the painted wine glasses to dry for 2 days. Next, bake the glasses at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes. Just place the painted wine glasses on a cookie sheet in the middle rack and space them so neither touches the other.
Step #8. Cool Your Hand Painted Wine Glasses
The change in temperature between the heat of the oven and the relative coolness of your kitchen could crack your painted wine glasses at this point. Therefore, leave them in the oven without opening the oven door for two hours.
You can wash your hand painted wine glasses with dish soap, but don’t place them in your dishwasher.
