Burger Joints Across America

Gastropubs are popping up all across the country where gourmet burgers are making their way onto the fine dining scene. But if it’s a real burger you’re looking for, served up with equal parts of attitude and awe, you’ll need to seek out a down home, All-American burger joint. You won’t find foie gras or truffles on these burger menus – just an awesome burger in a joint deserving of its regional notoriety.

Atlanta – Ann’s Snack Bar, 1615 Memorial Dr; Atlanta, GA

Miss Ann’s double bacon chili cheeseburger, called the “Ghetto Burger,” was touted by the Wall Street Journal as the best burger in America. Ann Price opened this tiny dining car in 1973 and continues to make and serve each and every burger personally by hand. Her ghetto burger consists of a pound of ground beef, bacon, tomato, lettuce, cheese, seasoning, mustard, mayonnaise, onions and chili on an oven-toasted bun. In addition to a burger that’ll knock your socks off, Miss Ann serves up a heaping portion of attitude as well. Just remember to mind your manners and you’ll be in for an experience you’ll not soon forget.

Chicago – Billy Goat Tavern & Grill, 430 N. Michigan Ave at Lower Level; Chicago, IL

Located in Chicago’s underground, Billy Goat Tavern was the inspiration for Saturday Night Live’s 1970s hit skit, “Cheezborger, Cheezborger, Cheezborger. No Pepsi … Coke!” Truly a Chicago icon, this classic greasy spoon serves a rockin’ diner burger for just $2.65. It now boasts 10 locations, but stick to the original on Michigan Avenue if you want the true Billy Goat experience. The ambiance is novel and nostalgic, and one I seek out each time I’m in the Windy City.

St. Louis – Carl’s Drive In, 9033 Manchester Rd; Brentwood, MO

This 16-seat, Route 66 favorite serves up its famed burgers hot and fast. It started as a place where local high school kids used to hang out, but has now morphed into the “in” spot for all generations. In addition to the crispy-edged burgers that keep local customers coming back for more, owner, Frank Cunetto, makes his own root beer which he serves in frosty mugs. The menu is short and sweet and provides great value for your buck. But bring cash, ’cause this joint doesn’t take plastic.

Denver – Bud’s Bar, 5453 Manhart St.; Sedalia, CO

An unpretentious little roadhouse bar with a dirt parking lot, Bud’s has been in business since 1948. An antique jukebox, vintage barstools and genuine branding board set the stage for his award-winning burgers. Just be sure a burger is what you’re craving, because you won’t find anything else on the menu here. In fact, the menu makes that clear with the statement, “We don’t have no damn fries.” Enough said.

Phoenix – Two Hippies Gnarly Burger Joint, 4041 E. Thomas Rd.; Phoenix, AZ

The décor of this cozy little burger joint screams peace, love and rock ‘n roll. The walls are lined with photos of yesteryear’s pop icons and every inch of flat surface is covered with some type of nostalgic kitsch. But this BYOB2 – build your own burger and bring your own beer – establishment serves up mouth-watering burgers custom made to order. Remember to grab some extra napkins and don’t be afraid to get messy with this groovy, far-out, right on burger experience.
