The Broken Lizard comedy troupe broke onto the scene in 2001 with their comedy hit “Super Troopers.” The movie starred the members as state troopers who seemed more willing to pull pranks than stop crime. It was comic brilliance. They then followed that up with three movies, all funny, but none up to the level of their breakthrough hit. Now, Broken Lizard member Kevin Heffeman said in a recent interview that the team was planning a sequel to “Super Troopers” and the script was already in place.
With “Super Troopers 2” on the way, here is a look at the career of Broken Lizard.
“Super Troopers”
While the first movie for the Broken Lizard guys was “Puddle Cruiser” in 1996, they broke out with “Super Troopers” five years later. The team included director/actor Jay Chandrasekhar, Heffeman, Erik Stolhanske, Paul Soter and Steve Lemme. The movie told the story of the hapless, carefree state troopers who find themselves in direct competition with the highway patrol as both units try to bust a major drug ring.
“Club Dread”
Next up was a horror spoof that did not receive anywhere near the love that “Super Troopers” did. “Club Dread” presented an island paradise where tourists come to enjoy the sun and beach. The Broken Lizard guys split up, with some serving as employees at the island resort while others were tourists. The story featured a serial killer on the loose on the island where everyone was in danger and any of the survivors could be the culprit.
“Beerfest”
The guys went back to the “frat boy humor” of “Super Troopers” with “Beer Fest” next. This movie told the story of two brothers who traveled to Germany after their grandfather passes away, only to find a super secret, underground beer drinking competition. The entire movie was ludicrous, with over-the-top beer games and a grandmother played by 80-year-old Cloris Leachman who continuously made crude suggestions.
“The Slammin’ Salmon”
The last movie to feature the Broken Lizard troupe was the 2009 comedy “The Slammin’ Salmon.” This movie saw the group star as employees in an upscale restaurant who hate their jobs and work under a ruthless, very cruel owner. When the owner ends up owning the mob money, he challenges the wait staff to see who can make the most money in one night, causing a night of havoc. The movie had its moments, but the true highlight was the late Michael Clarke Duncan as the owner.
