Best Toucan Snacks for Pre-Kinders

Did your Pre-K students recently complete a lesson plan on the Rain Forest? Have you been asked to bring a toucan themed snack to school to help the kids celebrate the end of the unit? If so, here are several treat ideas that you may find useful:

Dried Fruits

First of all, small bags filled with dried fruit would make an excellent toucan themed snack. To assemble the treat, you’ll need to obtain a few supplies. They are dried fruits, brown tissue paper, plastic snack bags, a pinch clothespin, cardstock and a toucan puppet template. The dried fruits and snack bags should be available for purchase through your local grocery story. You should be able to buy the tissue paper and clothespins through most craft stores. As for the toucan puppet template, you can find a full color one posted on the First Palette website.

Once you have your supplies on hand, glue the toucan puppet to a piece of cardstock. Then glue the cardstock to a pinch clothespin. Next, line the inside of the snack bag with brown tissue paper and fill it with the dried fruits. Afterward, seal the bag and attach the clothespin to the center of it. Doing so will make it look like the toucan is sitting on top of a tree branch. Later, hand the toucan snack bags out to all of the kids.

Ripe Plantain and Nutella Sandwiches

Toucan shaped, plantain and Nutella sandwiches made with rainbow bread would make super snacks too. Of course before you attempt to make the treat, you’ll need to invest in a toucan cookie cutter. The Walnut Creek Home and Garden store typically sells one for $18. You can usually purchase it through the store’s website. It creates a toucan shape that is over 5 inches tall. Other retailers sell toucan molds for around the same price. However, their molds tend to create a much smaller sandwich.

When you are ready to make the sandwiches, mash the ripe plantains into a bowl. Next, spread the mixture, along with some Nutella, onto two pieces of rainbow bread. Once that’s done, use the cookie cutter to form the sandwich into a toucan shape. Then serve the colorful and tasty sandwiches to your kids.

Frozen Fruit Yogurt

Toucan shaped, frozen yogurt is another snack to consider serving the kids. In order to make them, you’ll need a toucan silicone mold and the fruit yogurt of your choice. I’d recommend going with something tropical, like pineapple or papaya. The silicone molds are often available for purchase though retailers like Art Fire. On average, a small mold is apt to cost you $5. To make the toucan treats, simply fill the mold with fresh yogurt and pop it into your freezer. Let it remain in there until the fruit yogurt freezes solid. Later, push the toucan out of the mold and serve it on top of a dollop of whipped cream.

Tropical Fruit Salad with Coconut

Lastly, you may want to serve the kids tropical fruit salad inside coconut halves. You could opt to crack open and use real coconuts or buy plastic ones. The plastic cups tend to be available for purchase through party supply shops. In most cases, a dozen coconut cups will cost you around $20. If you have never made tropical fruit salad before, there is a recipe posted on the Food Network’s website that you could use.
