Best Restaurants Near Hampton Virginia

As with any town, Hampton Virginia has a large number of restaurants with lots of variety to choose from when it comes to finding a place to eat. Usually the best people to ask for a recommendation are the locals, so here is a list of the restaurants we, living in Hampton, frequent.

When deciding where to dine, there are several factors to take into consideration. The first, and most important factor, is the quality and taste of the food. The food should be fresh and taste better than what you could make back home. The second factor is cost. An incredible meal that costs our entire week’s food budget means scrapping the rest of the week and eating Ramen Noodles – that’s a no go. Finally, the place has to be clean and offer the food we’re craving. The restaurants listed below are the one’s that score high for each factor.

Cheddar’s
Location: Newport News, VA
Cheddar’s is an American style restaurant just outside of the Patrick Henry Mall right off of Interstate 64. I’ve tried several of their dishes and have yet to taste one I have not enjoyed. Despite the great taste, they don’t gyp you on portions either. Each time I’ve eaten here I’ve brought home lunch for the next day. I highly recommend Cheddar’s for the person who enjoys a good amount of flavorful classic American dining.

Bailey’s
Location: Newport News, VA
Bailey’s is another one of those great American restaurants located in the Patrick Henry Mall. Although lacking in the dessert department, Bailey’s has a great appetizer and entree menu. The Chicken Quesadillas are a favorite of mine and they go down smooth with their Red Fox Amber. In addition to the great food, the prices are average for the typical American pub. Bailey’s is also superior to most other pubs when it comes to watching the big sporting events. There are large screen televisions lining the walls so you don’t miss a snap of ANY of the big games on Sunday. Remember to check out their daily specials to see if there are any of interest to you and your group.

Slightly Up the Creek
Location: Newport News, VA
Slightly Up the Creek is one of two Seafood restaurants on our Best Restaurants near Hampton Virginia list. The seafood is fresh and well seasoned to add additional flavor to already succulent meat. The cost is reasonable and the special of the day is usually a steal ($7.99 for a lb of steamed jumbo shrimp excellently seasoned). We have noticed a difference in the food depending on the day, which we think might have to do with the chef that day. If you do try Slightly Up the Creek, don’t miss out on the Scallops sauteed in garlic sauce.

Bier Garten
Location: Portsmouth,VA
Bier Garten is a great German restaurant serving some of the most authentic German food in Hampton Roads. In addition to the great food is an extensive list of beers from around the world. Try pairing your food with a beer and you’ll notice a whole new realm of flavor. Although the prices are a bit more steep than the other restaurants on the list, it is well worth the price.

Gordon Biersch
Location: Virginia Beach
Gordon Biersch has a German name, but usually serves more American style cuisine. Their signature garlic fries are a must for any first timer as well as all of their German influenced micro brews. The burgers are tasty and the Martzen bbq sauce is delicious. Some of their more upscale dishes like the Pecan Crusted Salmon are well worth the additional expense. If you do enjoy the food, the beer and the atmosphere I wouldn’t hesitate to join their Passport rewards program. It is one of the best free programs you can join and comes with several chances to score free appetizers and entrees.

Bread Garden
Location: Newport News, VA
Okay, Bread Garden is not a restaurant, but a Korean bakery. The reason I have a bakery on the list is because they’re so darn good. They have a variety of sweet flavorful breads for sale, freshly made that day. Our favorites include the peanut butter bread as well as the sweet walnut bread with a creamy filling. This bakery is a must stop after any meal in Newport News.

Surf Rider
Location: Hampton, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake
Surf Rider is a local family owned seafood chain with 6 locations thorughout the Hampton Roads area. The food is very fresh and deliciously seasoned. Do try the home made crab dip and hush puppies, you will be pleasantly surprised. The dishes are well portioned for the quality and freshness of the food being served.

Thai Erawan
Location: Yorktown, VA
Thai Erwan is one of the few good Thai restaurants in the area. The food is delicious, can be made really spicy if requested and not overpriced.
