A Lost Guide to Sawyer’s Nicknames for Hurley

I always thought that when Lost was over there should be a sitcom starring Sawyer and Hurley as odd, opposite roommates. Two weeks ago that dream came true when Sawyer and Hurley roomed together in the Others’ old home. Over the past several seasons it has been common for Sawyer to give Hurley a nickname so I thought now would be a good time to reminisce about them and explain their meanings.

Avalanche
Avalanche is the name of a professional wrestler in WCW that was overweight.

Barbar
In one scene Sawyer gives Hurley the nickname Barbar. Barbar is actually the mispronunciation of a character named Babar. In the stories Babar is an elephant.

Deep Dish
A deep dish is a style of pizza. Not only is Sawyer implying that Hurley is overweight for eating pizza but a Deep Dish pizza is usually thicker than a usual pizza and therefore is even more unhealthy for you.

Grape Ape
The nickname Grape Ape is from a Saturday morning cartoon from Hanna-Barbera. Grape Ape was about an ape…that was grape.

Grimace
The nickname Grimace is in reference to Ronald McDonald’s large purple friend in McDonald’s commercials.

Hoss
When Sawyer calls Hurley “Hoss” he is referring to one of the brothers on the show Bonanza. Hoss was the largest of the three brothers.

Hulk
The Incredible Hulk is a very large comic book character created by Marvel Comics.

International House of Pancakes
The International House of Pancakes, more affectionately known as IHOP, is a popular restaurant chain most well known for their breakfast, especially their pancakes.

Jabba
When Sawyer uses the nickname Jabba for Hurley he is referring to Jabba the Hut. Jabba the Hutt is a character from Star Wars. Jabba the Hut is a very fat creature.

Jethro
Jethro is a reference to a character in the Beverly Hillbilles. In the Beverly Hillbillies a family of hillbillies became rich when they struck oil. Likewise, on Lost Hurley became very rich when he won the lottery during one of his flashbacks.

JumboTron
A JumboTron is a giant screen made by Sony that is used in stadiums at sporting events.

Mongo
The nickname Mongo is in reference to another overweight character from the movie Blazing Saddles. Although the name Mongo makes me think of the Chicago Bears defensive tackle Steve “Mongo” McMichael.

Muttonchops
When Sawyer calls Hurley by the nickname Muttonchops, he is referring to the patches of hair on the side of his face.

Pillsbury
The Pullsbury Doughboy is the mascot of Pillsbury. The Pillsbury Doughboy is very chubby and chuckles when you poke him in the stomach. No word on whether Hurley does too.

Rerun
Sawyer once again picked on Hurley for his weight when Sawyer used the nickname Rerun. Rerun was an overweight character on the television show “What’s Happening.”

Snuffy
Snuffy is the nickname of the character Aloysius Snuffleupagus, or just Mr. Snuffleepagus. Mr. Snuffleupagus was some type of woolly animal that is friends with Big Bird.

Stay Puft
The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man is basically a giant man made out of marshmallows. The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man was made popular by the movie Ghostbusters when giant Stay Puft destroys the city.

Three Men & a Baby
At one point Sawyer gives Hurley, Charlie and Aaron the nickname “Three Men & a Baby.” When they point out there are only two of them Sawyer says he counted Hurley twice.
